His Side

I’ve met some amazing people in my life. But very few come even remotely close to how amazing Cynth is.   From the first moment I met her in January, I knew she was different. She intrigued me. She wasn’t my usual “type”, which sounds so dumb to say at this point, but still something about how she carried herself. Something about how she spoke. Acted. It all intrigued me.   A month later I move and at first it was exciting! New everything. I got invited to gatherings, service, the whole thing. And someone was always there… Cynthia.   As time went on, I got to see her “multiple personalities” as she puts it. I got to see many angles of her. Of Cynthia Aimee Hinojosa. And each angle, each side just intrigued me more and more. From her logical, wise side to her goofy and feisty Mexican side. Each time I was with her I learned more and more and each time my appreciation for her grew.   Not to mention the support she gave me since I moved! I remember getting sick with a cold. I told her it was fine and I had ice cream to hold me over. Not even an hour later I get a message saying “I hear you got a delivery 😉” with soup and tea from Panera being delivered to help me feel better. The feelings I had are unexplainable.   After a while the changes caught up with me and I started feeling stressed. But I knew I wanted to get to know her on a more personal level. So I asked her out (after a bit of stress about not knowing how she felt about the age difference) and for SOME REASON… she said yes. To this day I have no idea why she chose me. But I intend to get better each and every day. And someday I hope to finally prove to myself that I deserve her. Though I doubt that will ever happen.

He conocido a personas increíbles en mi vida. Pero muy pocas se acercan siquiera remotamente a lo increíble que es Cynth.  Desde el primer momento que la conocí en Enero, supe que ella era diferente. Me intrigó. No era mi “tipo” habitual, lo cual suena tan tonto decir ahora, pero había algo en cómo se comportaba. Algo en cómo hablaba. Actuaba. Todo eso me intrigaba.  Un mes después me mudé y al principio fue emocionante: todo nuevo. Me invitaron a reuniones, al servicio, todo el paquete. Y alguien siempre estaba ahí… Cynthia.  Con el tiempo, pude ver sus “múltiples personalidades”, como ella dice. Vi muchos lados de ella. De Cynthia Aimee Hinojosa. Y cada ángulo, cada lado me intrigaba más y más. Desde su lado lógico y sabio hasta su lado mexicano, bromista y fogoso. Cada vez que estaba con ella aprendía más y más y mi aprecio por ella crecía.  Sin mencionar el apoyo que me dio desde que me mudé. Recuerdo que me enfermé con un resfriado. Le dije que estaba bien y que tenía helado para aguantar. Ni una hora después recibí un mensaje que decía “Escuché que te hicieron una entrega 😉” con sopa y té de Panera para ayudarme a sentirme mejor. Los sentimientos que tuve son inexplicables.  Después de un tiempo los cambios me alcanzaron y empecé a sentir estrés. Pero sabía que quería conocerla a un nivel más personal. Así que la invité a salir (después de un poco de estrés por no saber qué pensaba sobre la diferencia de edad) y por ALGUNA RAZÓN… dijo que sí. Hasta el día de hoy no sé por qué me eligió. Pero tengo la intención de mejorar cada día. Y algún día espero poder demostrarme a mí mismo que la merezco. Aunque dudo que eso alguna vez pase.

Her Side

If we’re talking about clueless people, go ahead and sign me up first. Brenden and I met at a gathering back in January—before he moved. At the time, he hadn’t told anyone about relocating, but that night he mentioned to me he was moving to Minneapolis! A couple of weeks later, he ended up moving into one of my friend’s apartments (Thanks, Becca!), since she was heading to Florida.    He showed up at the perfect time. I was feeling a little discouraged with my ministry, and then here he came—full of zeal, motivation, and contagious energy. Honestly, he reignited everyone’s enthusiasm. He was the breath of fresh air that was needed (or at least I definitely did).   Still, me being completely clueless, a month or two passed, and I was just being my usual not-so-graceful self. He got a front-row seat to my lack of patience when it comes to assembling furniture—and what I prefer to do instead. I basically bribed my friends with home-cooked meals to help build my new Murphy bed, and he got looped in as the “new guy.” It took four meals to finish that bed… hmm. After that, we kept hanging out—game nights, dinners, casual hangouts. He even witnessed me ugly-cry watching The Wild Robot. All in all, not exactly my most glamorous moments.   Then came a Wednesday evening while out in service. A sweet sister asked me, “Cynthia, what do you think of Brenden?” I said, “As a human?” She laughed. “Nooo, as a potential mate.”   “Susannnn,” I groaned. “I don’t think he’d be into me. There’s just no way.”   But Susan had her reasons. She’d been very observant. That night, I went home and realized I had been texting him regularly… while leaving other messages unread or on ‘read.’ Ugh. I liked him. Still, I was convinced he wouldn’t ask. They never do. It usually takes months—or it’s just harmless flirting with no intention.   But Brenden was different.   Two days later, he looked at me and said, “Sooo… I like you. Do you think we can get to know each other?”

Si vamos a hablar de personas despistadas, apúntame primero. Bren y yo nos conocimos en una reunión en Enero, antes de que él se mudara. En ese momento, no le había contado a nadie que se iba a mudar, pero esa noche me mencionó que se mudaría a Minneapolis. Un par de semanas después, terminó mudándose al apartamento de una amiga mía (¡Gracias, Becca!), porque ella se iba a Florida.  Él llegó en el momento perfecto. Yo me sentía un poco desanimada con mi ministerio, y entonces apareció él, lleno de entusiasmo, motivación y una energía contagiosa. Honestamente, él reavivó el entusiasmo de todos. Fue el aire fresco que hacía falta (o al menos yo lo necesitaba definitivamente).  Aun así, yo, completamente despistada, pasaron uno o dos meses y seguía siendo mi usual yo con poca gracia. Él fue testigo de mi poca paciencia para armar muebles — y lo que prefiero hacer en vez de eso. Básicamente, convencí a mis amigos con comidas caseras para que me ayudaran a armar mi nueva cama Murphy, y él se metió en el grupo como el “nuevo”. Nos tomó cuatro comidas terminar esa cama… hmm. Después de eso, seguimos saliendo — noches de juegos, cenas, encuentros casuales. Incluso me vio llorar feo viendo The Wild Robot. En fin, no exactamente mis momentos más glamorosos.  Entonces, una noche de miércoles durante el servicio, una hermana dulce me preguntó: “Cynthia, ¿qué piensas de Bren?” Yo respondí: “¿Como persona?” Ella se rió. “Nooo, como posible pareja.”  “Susannnn,” gemí. “No creo que él esté interesado en mí. No hay manera.”  Pero Susan tenía sus razones. Ella había estado muy observadora. Esa noche, llegué a casa y me di cuenta que le había estado enviando mensajes seguido… mientras dejaba otros sin leer o en ‘leído.’ Ugh. Me gustaba. Pero estaba convencida de que él no iba a invitarme a salir. Nunca lo hacen. Usualmente toma meses — o es solo un coqueteo inofensivo sin intención. Pero Bren era diferente.  Dos días después, me miró y dijo: “Así que… me gustas. ¿Crees que podríamos conocernos mejor?”
